Did you used to carry a BlackBerry, but have since moved on
to an iPhone, Android, or well… pretty much anything else? Do you ever wake up
in the middle of the night, pawing at the air for the glorious click of that
wideset physical keyboard?
Good news!
As we first noted back in October, BlackBerry has been
working on a “Classic” handset that mixes the best of many worlds: the keyboard
that once helped them rule the mobile world, a form factor that once proved
wildly successful for them, modern (if mid-range) specs, and the most recent version
of the BlackBerry operating system.
It’s called, aptly, the BlackBerry Classic.
Early this morning, Blackberry started taking pre-orders for
the device with a launch window of “mid-December”. According to MobileSyrup,
the company is aiming for an official launch day of December 17th.
(An interesting tidbit for those who haven’t paid attention
to BlackBerry in a while: newer BlackBerry devices can actually run Android
apps. You’ll be getting them from the Amazon App Store instead of Google and
they don’t always work as expected… but, hey, more apps.)
Also detailed today were some of the specs:
3.5 inch touchscreen (resolution unknown)
2GB of RAM
8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera
1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4
Will they sell millions of these things? Nah. Will it bring
BlackBerry back to the throne they once held? No way. But if you’re still
stubbornly clinging onto a BlackBerry Bold and just wish it was a bit more
up-to-date, this might fit the bill.
While the pre-order page is pretty much no where to be seen
on their US home page, you can find it hidden away right here for $450 off
contract.
